Putting BIOCHAR to work

From innovation to real-world solutions for agriculture, water & infrastructure for a more sustainable future

The Project

BIOCHAR is an innovation and demonstration project exploring how agricultural by-products and organic residues from Ireland’s Midlands can be converted into biochar, a proven natural material with wide-ranging practical applications.

We are investigating how biochar can improve soil health, water treatment processes and construction materials while creating sustainable, scalable economic & environmental opportunities for rural communities.

Our Planned Impact

Where innovation meets real-world change

Soil Health

Biochar improves soil structure, retains nutrients and enhances water holding capacity, reducing fertiliser loss and supporting long-term agricultural productivity.

Water Treatment

Biochar’s natural filtration properties remove organic contaminants from wastewater, offering a sustainable and effective treatment solution.

Carbon Storage

As a stable form of carbon, biochar locks carbon into the soil for the long term, contributing directly to Ireland’s climate action targets.

Peat-Free Horticulture

Biochar provides a high-performance, sustainable alternative to peat in growing media, supporting the horticultural sector’s transition away from peat extraction.

Emissions Reduction

Used as a manure additive in poultry and livestock settings, biochar reduces ammonia emissions and improves the quality of digestate entering anaerobic digestion.

Construction & Infrastructure

Spent biochar from water filtration can be incorporated into asphalt and road materials, creating a circular use pathway that reduces waste and strengthens infrastructure.
